Eminem 'Curtain Call: The Hits' Album and Advert Analysis

This is the front cover for Eminem album 'Cutain Call: The Hits'. From looking at this image, we are able to see that a main stage and someone bowing, with roses at their feet, is the dominate picture. This correlates with the album title 'Curtain Call', considering a curtain call is when the cast and crew take a bow in front of the audiences applaud after the theatrical performance. Thereby this can connote a number of ideas; the album cover and title intertwine with one another to give a perception, the album contains all of Eminem's greatest hits and Eminem is taking a bow to show a thankful gesture towards his fans. The roses lying on the floor denote love as they were thrown onto the stage by the audience, typically meaning they adored the performance.

The inside cover is simply Dr. Dre sitting with his head in his hands at the sound mixer while Eminem stands in the booth, rapping. This picture connotes the significance of hard work that they both went through in order to complete the album as we see Dr. Dre to appear tired or frustrated but also Eminem to be grinding. Although this cover puts Dr. Dre to be in the spotlight. Thereby giving recognition to Dr. Dre for all his effort and work done to the album, since he helped produce it.

Again, the back cover shows the performer on the main stage with roses at his feet, although this time its from a different perspective of which implements various new shadows onto the stage, potentially being the fans and photographers. This connotes, not only can the fans do great things for the artists or performers but they can also be a burden to them as the shadows may represent the darkness breaching into the artists life.

Here we see a close up of the back cover, displayed as the CD cover. The only difference is the change in tone, from colour to black indicating a change or disappearance in emotion. Similarly applying the darkness into his life, likewise from the back cover.

The following is an album poster for Eminem album 'Curtain Call'. The poster provides recognition of the album itself by previewing its artwork. It also reveals that the album is already out, therefore making the audience aware but also influencing them into purchasing the newly released album. Everything unveiled on the poster is conventional of a promotional poster; being it includes the artist, album name and artwork. All of which is all in the same font as the original album itself, thereby keeping consistency.
Overall, it is unambiguous that both of these media texts coordinate with each other due to their matching typography and artwork; providing synergy. The synergy integrates an effect onto the product that is greater than the sum of the individual element, such as being advertised solely on its own. Having greater advertisement promotes the artist and album on a wider scale but also encapsulates more consumers to purchase the product.

Rihanna 'LOUD' Album and Advert Analysis

This is the front cover of Rihanna's album 'Loud'. From looking at the image, despite the typography is in all capitals, it is clear that Rihanna's face dominates the cover implicating the idea of being the artist is the main attraction rather than the actual album itself. Therefore the audience is easily influenced into purchasing the album due to the artists well-known status, seamlessly assuming the music is good. The album cover itself, illuminates a bright red colour through her lipstick and hair. This gives connotations of love and passion but also provokes a 'sexy' image for Rihanna; a popular representation of the artist.

Furthermore, the inside cover uses a similar image as the one on the front. Rihanna's eyes are open and half of her face is covered. In essence, giving the impression she is mysterious but also has the ability to interact with the audience. The inside cover reveals Rihanna to be seen in three different colours; cream, red and violet. This due to the three colours relating to the stereotypical female but the use of the soft colours cream and violet essentially allow the red to stand out, catching the audiences attention. Considering her lips aren't the same bright red as the front cover suggests a more innocent person yet she holds a red rose close to her mouth indicating again that 'sexy' image and love but also femininity.

From looking at the back album cover, we are able to see the representation of Rihanna has digressed from someone who is bold and vibrant to someone who is potentially weak and vulnerable as the image is shown to have no eye-contact with the audience but also the colour, of which, was a bright red that has drifted to a washed-out light pink. Thereby proving the appeal to be aimed towards the typical women due to its angelic look. Besides this, the songs are revealed on the side in a bold deep red, emphasising their significance.

The design of the CD follows on from the inside cover as the disk is subject to being a rose although by it being a baby pink colour, it slowly transforms the look of the album into the following album cover - the back cover. Showing the continuity of the theme for Rihanna's album; sexual, love and passion.

The following is a promotional album poster for Rihanna's album 'Loud'. Although the album hasn't been released yet, as indicated by the bottom of the poster, it reveals the artwork of the album to potentially draw the attention of the audience from early on without unveiling the music. The poster follows the codes and conventions by featuring the artist name, album name, release date and the artist herself. The typography is the same font throughout and capitalises all, that would be important to the consumers.

Overall, it is clear that both of these products (the album and promotional poster) clearly correlate to each other due to their matching colour scheme of red and the dominate figure, being Rihanna's face. Therefore creating perfect synergy. By having synergy it can create opportunities to draw in more consumers but also produce a bigger yet easier advertisement for the artist and album.

Production Diary Ten

We, as a group, asked the public which Institution name they most preferred, thereby gaining a record label of which intrigues and is liked by the audience. Furthermore, we organised a lip-syncing practice as it allowed us to execute the actions and performance properly. From doing this we were also able to use the same footage for green screen practice. This enabled us to come to terms with how the green screen works but also how the software works to produce an efficient piece of work.

Lip Syncing Practice

Green Screen Practice

Above is an attempt into learning how to use the Green Screen, thereby several random effects were enforced into the background just so we could see the impact of using a green screen. However, although everything worked and went well except from the fact the top of my head was cut off, this means if we were to use this in our music video, we'd be missing the top of my head of which we and the audience do not want to see as it shows our artist to be unprofessional; but we have learnt from our mistake and are determined create a more effective piece for our music video.

Institution Names Audience Feedback

After evaluating the positive and negatives of numerous Institution names; why they would appeal to the audience and provoke success for our music video. We had various feedback from the public, deciding which Institutional name is most intriguing to them. Below is their votes:

As anticipated 'Popular Records' is the most preferred name by the public and our group. Consequently allowing the name 'Popular Records' to take toll in being the recognition for our record label. Thereby putting us in the position to not have the need to change our Focus Group Introduction.
